Points are accumulated over the course of the school year, at the end of which a House Cup is awarded to the house with the most. Giant hourglasses set in niches along one wall in a corner of the entrance hall record the points for all to see; Gryffindor's is filled with rubies, Ravenclaw's with sapphires, Slytherin's with emeralds and Hufflepuff's with tiger's eye. As a teacher or other authorized party speaks the words awarding or deducting points, the appropriate hourglass or hourglasses are automatically updated."

Instructions and Rules -

House points are only to be awarded or taken away by an authorized party such as: professors and a prefects, with the exception that prefects may not take points from other prefects. This term, the Aurors stationed at Hogwarts are also permitted to discipline the students by awarding and taking points.
