It seems like there are a lot of rules, but most of them are things you already know or common sense, however we please ask that you at least skim them. Also, these rules serve mostly as guidelines, and are somewhat up to interpretation. Small infractions will just result in a warning PM telling you to fix whatever we feel is necessary. However the administration does reserve the right to dismiss upon severe abuse of the rules. We ask that you follow the rules to make roleplaying on the site more enjoyable for everyone. You have three chances to correct errors before permanent expulsion.

warnings: issued for small infractions and first time abusers
warning two: issued as a ‘one more issue and you are gone’ to second time abusers
permanent banishment: issued for third time abusers or any serious rule breaking

When creating an account, use firstnamelastname format is preffered. This does not effect your display name later, after you are approved you can change your display name to firstname lastname. Because most people do not like this, this is not mandatory, but i am guaranteed to like you a WHOLE lot more if you do this.

Example:
Account name: rebeccataylor
Display Name: Rebecca Taylor

Before having your character approved, you may only post at the Sorting Hat. There is no posting in character or out of character until you are approved at the Sorting Hat. However once you are approved you can post anywhere your heart desires.

Any account that is made and left to sit for two weeks without any activity or application for a character will be deleted.

When applying for a character, you must use the application found in the Sorting Hat Board. The Sorting Hat thread holds all applications, pending, approved, and denied. Only completed applications will be accepted at any time, however you may post half of your application, mark it [NC] for not completed, and continue to work on it. If it is marked NC, we do expect it finished as soon as possible however, NC boards left to sit for more than two weeks without PMing an admin about an absence will be deleted.

The house of your character may be suggested in your application under the proper area, however the admins may choose to sort you into another house based on the character traits in your application or availability of house openings at the current time.

No Mary/Gary-sues. Your character is not perfect. They are not stunningly beautiful, have straight O’s, aced their Newts, and the most popular person ever. Everyone has their flaws, everyone has those things they hate about themselves and others hate about them as well. Your character is no exception.

You may make as many characters as you can properly keep up with. Meaning all characters must stay active at all times. But please post for the appropriate character in the appropriate account. Don’t be lazy

Not everyone has special powers. You must apply to be a parseltongue, metamorphmagus, werewolf or animagus. These will be given to the few and far between. This also goes for blood-status. Not everyone is a pure-blood. Please mix your blood levels up. It is not the end of the world to be muggleborn or half-blooded. It makes you more interesting.

All Hogwarts students must live in the UK. They don’t have to be born there, but they must have been living their part of their lives in order to be accepted to Hogwarts.

Everyone (save for twins) must use a different celebrity for their character. A complete list can be found in the Sorting Hat Board. Also, use a celebrity that is age appropriate, or if you want to use a celebrity that is not age appropriate, find younger pictures of them that will pass for the appropriate age. There are tons of attractive young celebs out there that can be used for your character. Don’t be afraid to use them.

A canon list can be found in the Sorting Hat board, however if there is a canon we left out that you would like to play, feel free to PM us at any time. We do need you to PM an admin before applying as an unlisted canon, however.

One canon per player. No, you can not play Rose, Hugo, and Scorpius. This is so that a multitude of people can have a chance at playing a canon and so that one person does not have too much control over canon events. Think of it as a system of checks and balances.

Canon applications must be excellent, interesting, and be somewhat accurate to the books. Such as Teddy Lupin is a metamorphmagus not a werewolf. (Harry's children James is the oldest followed by Albus Severus then Lily and so forth. You get the idea.

Use hp-lexicon.com for all information regarding canons so that everyone is on the same page.

No power playing, god-moding, you know the drill. You can not post: Mr. X pulled out his wand and shot a spell at Mr. Y, killing him. You can not hurt, kill, move, or greatly affect any other characters without their permission. That also means you can not hear the thought process of the other character, and comment on it in your character's thoughts.

This is an intermediate to advanced roleplay, so you may not post one liners. Or two liners. Or three liners for that matter. You should be posting at least three solid paragraphs with four to six sentences per paragraph. Try for atl least 300 words minimum. It isn’t really that hard. If you want help on figuring out what to write next, pm/im the other roleplayers or take a look at our ‘improve your post’ thread in our help board.

Use spell check, use proper grammar, use proper punctuation. You may bold your dialogue. You may not use bright colors that clash with the boards or are unreadable. We ask you do not change the font, though you may post in font sizes 1, 2, or 3.

Use third person, past tense. Always.

This roleplay is unrated, however all non-marked threads are only allowed up to a PG-13 content rating. This means that you can use some profanity, some sexual content, thematic elements, you may use one explicit swear word once, etc. Anything more than that must be marked (R) or (NC-17) based on content. Be wise when marking your posts. If you have any questionable content, mark it.

Finally, if a thread is reserved, mark who it is reserved for in the title or at the top of your first post in bolded or underlined text. Do not post on a thread that is reserved for someone else

All icons must be 100x100. All signatures must not stretch the board. They also can not exceed a height of 200 pixels. Smaller is nice.

NO nudity, sexually explicit pictures. This is an immediate banishment if offended. We also really don’t want to see your character in their underwear either. Even if they are Miranda Kerr and have cute pictures from the Victoria Secret Fashion Shows. No. Just no.

Do not take any issues IC into OCC. This goes for any issue. If you really have a problem, pm the person you have a problem with and talk it out. Do not involve anyone else. Any issues and you will be immediately banished.

Do not use chatspeak unless you are trying to be funny.

Keep swearing to a minimum. Use common courtesy and tact please.

Goof off, have fun, use the OCC boards to do whatever you want.

Don’t spam, don’t advertise.

This is a context based roleplay, and J.K. Rowling’s rules, for the most part, still apply.

You can not access any of the common rooms of other house under any circumstance. You do not even know where they are. You can not trick a student into telling you where they are. However, girls and boys may sneak into each other’s dorms. The boys better have an interesting way of doing it because the staircases still transform if they try to go into the girls’ dorms.

Dress code must be worn when classes are in session. You may alter it slightly, but you better not be caught by a teacher. It does not matter how you wear it after classes are out for the day.

Certain places are forbidden. Forbidden Forest is called so for a reason. So is teacher’s offices without permission, being out past curfew, etc. You may enter these places as long as you don’t get caught. Also, not everyone can sneak around without being caught past curfew. You are not ninjas.

No spells outside of the classroom or outside of school. Again, you may do so without being caught.

You must attend all of your classes, without fail. So don’t sign up for more than you can handle.

Electronics do not work within Hogwarts grounds (Hogwarts, A History). So you don’t have an ipod, a stereo system, or a tv. Electronics may be used in your residences and muggle areas only.

You may bring a rat, cat, owl, toad, turtle, or if you want to be particularly colorful, you may bring a small caged bug. You may also have puffskeins, as they were allowed in the seventh book of Harry Potter. You may not bring: snakes, dogs, dragons, unicorns, hippogriffs, etc. Anything that could cause serious fear or harm.

There are ten students per house, per year. Five girls, five boys, totaling 280 students. One head girl, one head boy, two prefects per house, per year.

Our adminstration feels that these rules are just and fair. We reserve the right to dismiss you from the site at any given time. We have a no tolerance policy reguarding all of the above rules. These rules can be updated and modified at any time as we see fit.
